For our weekend in VT (check out Part 1) we stayed at A Stone Wall Inn located in Windham. Let me quickly flashback to 2012 when Harrison and I got married and one of our wedding presents from my sister and others was a Living Social Deal they purchased to A Stone Wall Inn for a two night stay. Unfortunately life and its circumstances didn’t allow us to use the voucher within the necessary time frame but I held on to it knowing that the paid value didn’t expire. As Owen is getting a little older and is able to stay with his grandparents for a night I thought I’d try and plan a surprise weekend away for Harrison and me. I contacted the Inn about using the voucher and was pleasantly surprised to have it easily taken care of, no questions asked, so that the amount we paid at check-in was already minus the voucher amount.
When making reservations at the Inn you must specify what time you plan to check-in. While this may seem unusual to some, it is due to the fact that there is only one employee at the Inn, Sean, who has to oversee everything going on. So he cannot wait around all afternoon/evening waiting for guests to arrive. We didn’t find this to be an issue for us, we arranged to check-in between 5-6PM giving us plenty of time to get there from the mountain and also time to stop for a quick drink.
The day before our departure we received an email from Sean with detailed instructions reminding us what our check-in time was and what the door code was that we would need to access the Inn that day. All of the outside entry way doors have an electronic key pad on them so that only registered guests have access to the building. I really liked this feature seeing as though the Inn is located in a remote setting deep in the woods.
Although the Inn states on their website that you shouldn’t rely on Google Maps for directions to get to the Inn we didn’t have any problems finding it. They do give directions on their website but I just searched for it and found it with no troubles. The sign on the road was very well lit and the place itself was lit up like a palace and stood out even though it was tucked into the trees. There was no question in our minds that we had arrived at the right place!
Upon entering the Inn you find yourself standing in a foyer with doors on all sides. Clear signage on the door up the stairs and to our left told us to proceed through the lounge to the office for registration, which is where we went. The office door was shut but there was a doorbell which quickly brought Sean to our service. 5 minutes later we were all checked-in and on our way to our room. Sean handed us a map (see below) of the grounds so we had an idea of where things were, and led us on a tour of the Long House.
There are so many neat and charming things about the Inn that will always stick in my mind. As advertised, the Inn is very Eco-friendly. From recycling & composting in the kitchen area, to the use of only wood stoves and passive solar for heating. We loved all the details that went into the place when it came to using locally made things. The breakfast bar included so many items all made in VT and the showers all had shampoo and soap made there as well.
For those who can’t escape TV, there is a television for use in the lounge, but we didn’t take advantage of this amenity. Both the lounge and the breakfast area have music playing (which can be turned off), but we found that to be a nice addition. The lounge was also equipped with a number of board games as well as numerous comfy sitting areas and a bar with a small fridge for use by guests.
There is a hot tub and sauna area free to use by all guests. We took advantage of the hot tub the first night we were there after a long day on the slopes. It was very enjoyable!
From here I’m going to let pictures do the talking. It was a really neat place, the architecture was so interesting, and it left us constantly looking around at our surroundings. We had a very enjoyable stay and were so pleased to have found this gem of an Inn. We will definitely be back!
